Blue Bell coupleSat, Nov. 6, 2010 - Blue Bell couple continues daughter's work in nonprofit to help families of seriously ill - By Kristin E. Holmes, Inquirer Staff Writer

Blue Bell couple The moment when Phil and Nancy Siegel realized their daughter had found a new calling came in a hospital room. Jillian A. Siegel, 20, was battling acute myeloid leukemia at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, but the Pennsylvania State University sophomore was working the phones and writing letters to help organize Thon, the giant annual charity dance marathon at her school. "We thought, 'We've got to stop this, she's got to rest,' " said Nancy Siegel, of Blue Bell. "But then we thought, this is the passion that you want your child to have."

In 2008, at the age of 20, Jillian Aggie Siegel, a sophomore at Penn State, Main Campus, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) during her final semester exams. Acute myeloid leukemia is cancer that starts inside bone marrow, the soft tissue inside bones that helps form blood cells. The cancer grows from cells that would normally turn into white blood cells.

Jill persevered through months of treatments in the hope that she would be able to be given a second chance at life through a bone marrow transplant. She coped with courage; never losing her resolve. Jill was determined that through her own illness she could help others. From her hospital bed, she spent her time raising funds for a charity that supports childhood cancer.

Sadly, in February 2009, Jillian Aggie Siegel lost her battle.Watching her and other adolescents in the hospital suffer through the arduous process of trying to conquer the disease, Jill's parents saw the financial and emotional toll that the disease takes on the families of the patients. It is in Jill's memory that Phil and Nancy have set up Jill Just Wants 2 Help, a public charity organized to assist those families.

Jill Just Wants 2 Help recently formed an alliance with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) to provide financial resources for the families of young adults suffering from leukemia. Eventually, with the generous support of people like you, Jill Just Wants 2 Help hopes to establish Jill's House, a supportive housing facility, in close proximity to HUP, for patients undergoing treatment and their families. To become part of this special endeavor, go to Penn Medicine and complete the giving form for the Jill Just Wants to Help Fund.
